CONTENT:

  1. The Death of Jesus (Matthew 27:45–54; Luke 23:44–46)
  • From the sixth hour (12 noon) to the ninth hour (3 p.m.), darkness covered the whole land.
  • Jesus cried out with a loud voice and gave up His spirit.
  • The curtain in the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, signifying direct access to God.
  • There was a great earthquake.
  • A Roman centurion, after witnessing the events, declared, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
  1. The Burial of Jesus (Matthew 27:55–66; Luke 23:50–56)
  • After Jesus died, a man named Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the Jewish council and a secret follower of Jesus, asked Pilate for Jesus’ body.
  • Pilate granted him permission.
  • Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in a new tomb carved out of rock.
  • A large stone was rolled across the entrance.
  • Mary Magdalene and other women watched from a distance.
  • Pilate ordered guards to secure the tomb because the Pharisees remembered Jesus saying He would rise again on the third day.
  1. Significance of the Death and Burial of Jesus
  • Fulfillment of prophecy: Jesus’ death and burial fulfilled Old Testament prophecies (Isaiah 53:9).
  • Proof of His humanity: Jesus experienced real human death.
  • Demonstration of love and sacrifice: He gave His life willingly for our salvation.
  • Foundation of Christian faith: His burial proves He truly died before rising again.
  • Encouragement for believers: Jesus was buried with honor, and we also have hope beyond the grave.
