CONTENT:
- Meaning of Commission
A commission is an instruction, command, or duty given to a person or group of people.
In Christian terms, The Great Commission refers to the final command of Jesus to His disciples to go into the world and preach the gospel to all people.
- The Story of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16–20; Mark 16:14–20)
- After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples in Galilee.
- He told them that all authority in heaven and on earth had been given to Him.
- Jesus then commanded them:
- Go and make disciples of all nations
- Baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit
- Teach them to obey all the things He had taught them
- He ended by assuring them, “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
- In Mark’s account, Jesus also told them that signs would follow those who believe, such as healing the sick, speaking in new tongues, and casting out demons.
- Significance of the Great Commission
- It is a command to all believers: Every Christian is expected to share the gospel with others.
- It marks the beginning of Christian missions and evangelism.
- It shows Jesus’ universal authority: He has power over heaven and earth.
- It assures believers of His presence: Jesus promised to be with His followers always.
- It promotes the spread of Christianity throughout the world.
- It calls Christians to teach and disciple others, not just convert them.
