WEEK 2: SCALES AND SCALE DRAWING

- Simple scale drawing
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Explain the meaning of scale in relation to drawing.
- Highlight the types of scale.
- Differentiate between various types of scales.
- Draw objects to given scales (Enlargement and Reduction).
Instructional Materials:
- Rulers, pencils, erasers
- Graph sheets
- Examples of scaled maps and drawings
- Drawing instruments (set squares, compasses, etc.)
Lesson Development:
- Meaning of Scale
A scale is the ratio of the size of a drawing or model to the actual size of the object it represents.
It helps in representing large objects like buildings, bridges, and machines on paper in manageable sizes.
Example:
If a wall is 10 meters long and it is drawn as 10 cm on paper, the scale is 1 cm : 1 m or 1:100.
- Types of Scales
There are three major types of scales used in technical drawing:
- Full Scale:
When the drawing is made to the same size as the actual object.
Example: 1:1 - Reduced Scale:
When the drawing is made smaller than the actual object.
Example: 1:10, 1:100 - Enlarged Scale:
When the drawing is made larger than the actual object (often used for small components).
Example: 2:1, 5:1 - Simple Scale Drawing
A simple scale drawing uses a linear measurement to represent actual dimensions.
Steps to draw using a scale:
- Determine the actual size of the object.
- Choose a suitable scale (e.g., 1:50).
- Divide the actual measurement by the scale ratio.
- Draw the object according to the new scaled measurement.
Example:
If a table is 200 cm long and the scale is 1:50,
So the table should be drawn 4 cm long on paper.
Class Activities:
- Students draw a simple rectangular box using a 1:2 scale (enlarged).
- Draw a classroom plan using a 1:100 scale (reduced).
Evaluation Questions:
- Define scale in relation to drawing.
- List and explain three types of scale.
- What is the scale ratio if 5 cm represents 10 m?
- Differentiate between enlargement and reduction.
- A road 2000 m long is represented by 20 cm on a map. Find the scale used.
Assignment:
Draw a simple floor plan of your classroom using a scale of 1:50. Label key parts like doors and windows.
