Introduction

Ancient Jews usually had only one name, and, when greater specificity was needed, it was customary to add the father’s name or the place of origin. Thus, in his lifetime Jesus was called Jesus son of Joseph (Luke 4:22; John 1:45, 6:42), Jesus of Nazareth (Acts 10:38), or Jesus the Nazarene (Mark 1:24; Luke 24:19). After his death he came to be called Jesus Christ.

Why is Jesus called Christ?

Christ was not originally a name but a title derived from the Greek word Christos, which translates the Hebrew term Meshiah (Messiah), meaning “the anointed one.” This title indicates that Jesus’ followers believed him to be the anointed son of King David, whom some Jews expected to restore the fortunes of Israel. Isaiah 53 and Micah 5:2,

The term “Christ” comes from the Greek word Christos, meaning “Anointed One,” which is a translation of the Hebrew term Messiah. Therefore, Jesus Christ signifies that Jesus is the promised Messiah foretold in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament). Key Bible references to Jesus as the Messiah include Isaiah 53 and Micah 5:2, which prophesy his coming.

Key Theological Beliefs about Jesus Christ

Divine Nature

Christians believe that Jesus is the Son of God, part of the Holy Trinity, which includes God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. This trinitarian belief underscores Jesus’ divine nature and eternal existence.

Key Bible Reference:

John 1:1-2 — “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.”

Colossians 2:9 — “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.

Incarnation

The doctrine of the Incarnation holds that Jesus is God made flesh. This means that while Jesus was fully divine, he also became fully human, experiencing human life and limitations.

Key Bible Reference:

John 1:14 — “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Philippians 2:6-7 — “Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.”

Atonement and Resurrection

Central to Christian belief is that Jesus’ death on the cross served as an atoning sacrifice for the sins of humanity. His resurrection three days later is seen as a triumph over sin and death, offering believers the promise of eternal life.

Key Bible Reference:

1 Peter 2:24 — “He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.”

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 — “For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.”

Mediator and Intercessor

Jesus Christ is viewed as the mediator between God and humans, interceding on behalf of believers and facilitating a personal relationship with God.

Key Bible Reference:

1 Timothy 2:5 — “For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus.”

Hebrews 7:25 — “Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.”

Second Coming

Christians anticipate the return of Jesus Christ at the end of times to judge the living and the dead, establish God’s Kingdom in fullness, and bring about the final redemption of creation.

Key Bible Reference:

Matthew 24:30 — “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory.”

Revelation 22:12 — “Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done.”

Significance in Christian Life

Jesus Christ is not only a historical or theological figure but also the foundation of Christian faith and practice. Believers seek to emulate his teachings, follow his example of love and service, and maintain a personal relationship with him through prayer and worship.

Different Christian denominations may emphasize various aspects of Jesus’ identity and mission, but the recognition of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is a unifying element across Christianity.

Key Bible Reference:

John 14:6 — “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'”

Acts 4:12 — “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

MAN’S FALLEN NATURE

According to Scripture, man’s fallen nature is a key theme throughout the Bible. Here’s a summary of what the Bible says about man from his fallen nature:

Created in God’s Image (Original Nature): Man was originally created in the image and likeness of God. In Genesis 1:27, it states, “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” This highlights man’s original nature as pure, holy, and good, designed to live in perfect fellowship with God.

The Fall of Man: The fall of man occurs in Genesis 3 when Adam and Eve disobey God by eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, despite God’s command not to. Their disobedience leads to sin entering the world. As a result, man’s nature becomes fallen, separated from God, and subject to sin and death. Romans 5:12 explains, “Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.”

Sinful Nature: After the fall, man’s nature is characterized by sin. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” The fallen nature makes man inclined toward disobedience, selfishness, and rebellion against God’s will. In Ephesians 2:3, the Apostle Paul describes fallen humanity as “by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.”

Spiritual Death and Separation from God: Because of sin, man experiences spiritual death, which is separation from God. Isaiah 59:2 says, “But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear.” This separation leads to a life of brokenness, suffering, and eventually physical death.

The Need for Redemption: Despite man’s fallen nature, the Bible presents hope through redemption in Christ. Romans 5:18-19 says, “Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.” Jesus’ death and resurrection offer salvation and the restoration of man’s relationship with God.

The New Nature in Christ: Through faith in Christ, man’s fallen nature can be transformed. 2 Corinthians 5:17 declares, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” Through the Holy Spirit, believers are renewed and empowered to live according to God’s will.

In summary,

Scripture teaches that man’s fallen nature resulted from disobedience to God in the Garden of Eden, leading to sin, death, and separation from God. However, through Christ, man can be redeemed, restored, and given a new nature, enabling him to live in relationship with God once again.
