The Emmanuel Alayande College of Education in Oyo traces its roots back to St. Andrew’s College, Oyo, initially established as a Grade II Teachers’ College in 1896. In 1980, it was upgraded to a College of Education Campus under the Oyo State College of Education, Ila-Orangun. Over the years, the institution has undergone several name changes: first to St. Andrew’s College of Education, Oyo, then Oyo State College of Education, Oyo, and finally, in 2008, it was renamed Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo. This renaming honors Rev. Canon Emmanuel Alayande, a distinguished educationist and alumnus, while maintaining the institution’s original educational mission as outlined in its Enabling Law. Since its relocation to its current site, the College has experienced significant growth, supported by funding from the Oyo State Government and various interventions from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
The primary mission of the College is to serve as an academic hub for producing highly qualified Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) teachers. The transition from awarding Teachers’ Grade II certificates to NCE qualifications underscores the institution’s responsiveness to societal and educational demands. To date, the College has graduated thousands of proficient teachers and professionals across various fields, all of whom contribute meaningfully to national development.
