EXCRETORY SYSTEM J S 2 LESSON NOTE
WEEK: THREE DATE: CLASS: JS2
SUBJECT: BASIC SCIENCE
LESSON TITLE: EXCRETORY SYSTEM
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, students should be able to
(1). Explain the term excretory system
(2). Describe urinary system and explain how it function.
KEY VOCABULARY WORDS: Metabolism, chemical, reaction, catabolism, digestion, waste product, undigested food.
EXCRETORY SYSTEM J S 2 LESSON NOTE
RESOURCES & MATERIALS: Skin, kidney, lungs, Basic Science Textbook for JSCE, page 19-20, By P.A Adebayo Basic Science Made Easy Book 2, By Tunde, Kehinde, Page 38
BUILDING BACKGROUND/CONNECTION TO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE: The students are familiar with digestion, circulatory system before in the previous lesson.
CONTENT: Excretion is the process by which an organism get ride of metabolic waste product from the body .
The excretory system is a biological system responsible for removing waste products and excess materials from the body to maintain homeostasis, which is the internal balance necessary for the body’s proper functioning. The primary function of the excretory system is to eliminate metabolic waste products and maintain the body’s fluid and electrolyte balance.
Key components of the excretory system include
- Kidneys: The kidneys are vital organs that filter blood to remove waste products, excess ions, and water, forming urine. They also play a crucial role in regulating blood pressure and electrolyte balance.
- Ureters: These are tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder. Peristaltic contractions help move the urine along the ureters.
- Urinary Bladder: The bladder is a muscular organ that stores urine until it is ready to be expelled from the body. It can expand and contract to accommodate varying amounts of urine.
- Urethra: The urethra is a tube that carries urine from the bladder to the exterior of the body. In males, it also serves as the duct for semen.
The excretory system is crucial for maintaining the body’s internal environment by eliminating metabolic waste products, regulating electrolyte and fluid balance, and helping to control blood pressure. In addition to the kidneys, other organs such as the skin, lungs, and liver also contribute to the excretion of certain waste products through processes like sweating, breathing, and bile secretion.
Need for Excretion
(i). To maintain salt content from the body.
(ii). To remove excess water from the body.
Excretory Organ And Waste Product
(1). Kidney – urine
(2). Lungs – carbon (iv) oxide (CO2)
(3). Liver – bile pigment
(4). Skin – sweat (salts, water, urea).
STRATEGIES & ACTIVITIES: Critical thinking & problem solving
Activity (1). The students were group into groups.
(2). The students in one group were carrying the cardboard with a diagram.
(3). The students in group B observe and explain what they can see and the teacher expatiate the whole topic again.
ASSESSMENT (EVALUATION): Assessment was done by asking question based on the behavior objectives.
(1). Explain the term excretory system
(2). Describe urinary system and explain how it function.
WRAP-UP (CONCLUSION): The whole topic was revise again for the students.
ASSIGNMENT:
Assignment was given to the whole class.
Draw the diagram of the kidney and skin.
