LESSON NOTE FOR J S 2 AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE

TOPIC: Factors to Consider Before Deciding Animal Feeds

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Enumerate the purpose for rearing farm animals.
  2. Identify the materials used for feeding farm animals.
  3. Analyze the factors to be considered before deciding on animals’ feed.

KEY VOCABULARY WORDS:

  • Age
  • Physiological status
  • Purpose of rearing
  • Feeding tools

Factors to Consider Before Deciding Animal Feeds:

  1. Age

The age of the animal plays a significant role in deciding the type of feed. Younger animals require feeds rich in protein and energy to support their growth and development. Older animals may need feeds that maintain their health but with fewer energy requirements compared to growing animals.

  2. Physiological Status

The physiological state of an animal, such as whether it is pregnant, lactating, or in its growth phase, will determine the type and amount of feed needed. Pregnant and lactating animals require more nutrient-dense feeds to support the growth of their offspring and milk production.

  3. Purpose of Rearing

The reason for raising the animal influences its feeding. For example:

  • Meat production (broilers, rabbits): Animals raised for meat need high-energy feeds to grow fast and produce quality meat.
  • Egg production (layers): Poultry reared for egg production need calcium-rich feeds to ensure healthy eggs.
  • Breeding purposes: These animals may need balanced feeds that support reproductive health and sustainability.

Feeding Tools:

Farm animals are usually fed using different tools such as:

  • Feed troughs for dry feeds like grains.
  • Water troughs for providing clean drinking water.
  • Feed buckets for mixing and serving special feeds.
These tools help ensure that animals eat in a clean and organized manner.

Characteristics of Selected Farm Animals:

  • Poultry (chickens, turkeys): Poultry are commonly raised for eggs and meat. They require feed rich in grains, protein, and calcium.
  • Rabbit: Rabbits are small animals raised for meat. They thrive on a diet of green leaves, vegetables, and pellets. They are easy to rear with little space.

STRATEGIES AND ACTIVITIES:

  1. Discussion on the importance of selecting the right feed for different animals.
  2. Group activity where students identify feeds suitable for different types of farm animals.
  3. Practical demonstration of feeding tools used for farm animals.

WRAP UP & ASSESSMENT:

  • Ask students to list three factors that influence the choice of feed for farm animals.
  • Assess students’ understanding by having them identify and describe different feeding tools.

ASSIGNMENT:

  1. Research and write down three feeding tools used on a farm and describe their uses.
  2. Explain the feeding needs of one farm animal based on its age and purpose of rearing.
