  1. Meaning of Family:

A family is a group of people related by blood, marriage, or adoption. It is the first and most important unit of social life. It is where a person is born, raised, and taught basic values.

  2. Nuclear Family:
  • Consists of the father, mother, and their children living together.
  • Also called the immediate family.
  • Common in urban areas.

Features of a Nuclear Family:

  • Small in size
  • Direct parental care
  • Easier to manage
  1. Extended Family:
  • Consists of the nuclear family and other relatives such as grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins.
  • Common in rural areas.

Features of an Extended Family:

  • Large in size
  • Shared responsibilities
  • Stronger family ties
  1. Single-Parent Family:
  • Consists of one parent (either father or mother) and the children.
  • May result from divorce, separation, death, or choice.
  1. Polygamous Family:
  • Consists of a man, his wives, and their children.
  • Common in traditional African societies.
