  3. Describe the methods of controlling fungal diseases in farm animals.

KEY VOCABULARY WORDS:

  • Fungi
  • Transmission
  • Symptoms
  • Control
  • Spores

RESOURCE AND MATERIALS:

  • Pictures of farm animals with fungal infections
  • Chalkboard/Whiteboard
  • Marker/chalk
  • Posters showing control methods of fungal diseases

BUILDING BACKGROUND:

Students may have seen animals with skin infections or diseases on farms or in their communities. These could be caused by fungi, and today we will learn how they affect farm animals and how to control them.

CONTENT:

1. Fungal Diseases in Farm Animals:
Fungal diseases are infections caused by fungi, which are tiny organisms that thrive in moist and dirty environments. They affect the skin, hair, and hooves of farm animals.

2. Mode of Transmission:
Fungi can spread through:

  • Contact with infected animals
  • Infected tools, equipment, or bedding
  • Dirty and moist environments
  • Spores in the air

3. Symptoms of Fungal Infections in Farm Animals:

  • Circular patches of hair loss
  • Itchy skin
  • Red or swollen skin
  • Thickened or crusty skin
  • Reduced appetite and weight loss

4. Methods of Control:

  • Good hygiene practices: Keep animal houses and equipment clean and dry.
  • Isolate infected animals: Prevent contact between sick animals and healthy ones.
  • Use of antifungal medication: Apply creams, sprays, or powders to affected areas.
  • Disinfection: Clean animal housing with disinfectants to kill fungi.
  • Proper waste disposal: Dispose of animal waste properly to avoid fungi growth.

Animal Pest and Diseases Control -J S 2 Second term Week 4

STRATEGIES AND ACTIVITIES:

  1. Class Discussion: Discuss how fungal diseases can spread among animals and the importance of keeping the farm environment clean.
  2. Group Activity: Divide the students into groups and have them identify the mode of transmission, symptoms, and control methods of fungal diseases from provided pictures.
  3. Demonstration: Show students how to apply antifungal treatments on infected animals through a practical or role-play.

WRAP UP & ASSESSMENT:

Ask the students to summarize what they have learned about fungal diseases in farm animals.

  • What is a fungal disease?
  • How do they spread?
  • What are the symptoms and control methods?

Assessment:

  • Oral questions
  • Short quiz on fungal diseases, symptoms, and control methods

ASSIGNMENT:

Research another farm animal disease (other than fungi) and describe its mode of transmission and control.
