LESSON OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Explain the term fishery
  2. State the importance of fish and fish products
  3. List the uses of fish products
  4. Identify methods of fishing
  5. Identify and describe common fishing tools
  6. Create or demonstrate any simple fishing tools of their choice

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE:

Students may have seen fish, eaten fish products, or observed local fishermen and fishing tools.

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR:

The teacher presents a smoked fish or picture of a fishpond and asks:

  • “Have you ever eaten fish before? Where did it come from?”
  • “Do you know how people catch fish?”

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS:

  • Real or sample fishing tools (hooks, nets, traps)
  • Pictures or charts showing fishery practices
  • Sample fish products: dry fish, fish oil container, fish meal packet
  • Fishing line and bottle demonstration materials

CONTENT OUTLINE:

  1. Definition of Fishery:

Fishery is the branch of agriculture that deals with the capturing, rearing, and management of fish and other aquatic animals such as shrimp, crab, and snails for human consumption and commercial purposes.

It includes both natural (capture) and artificial (culture) systems of fish production.

  1. Importance of Fish and Fish Products:
  • Source of Protein: Fish is rich in animal protein, which is essential for body growth and repair.
  • Economic Value: Provides income for fishermen, fish farmers, and traders.
  • Foreign Exchange: Export of fish and fish products generates foreign income.
  • Employment: Creates jobs in fishing, processing, packaging, and marketing.
  • Health Benefits: Fish contains omega-3 fatty acids which are good for the heart and brain.
  • Food Security: Increases food availability in communities.
  1. Uses of Fish and Fish Products:
  • Fish Flesh (Meat): Consumed fresh, dried, smoked, or canned
