Junior Secondary School 3 | Depletion of the Ozone Layer

Junior Secondary School 3 | Depletion of the Ozone Layer

WEEK 10

LESSON PLAN

TOPIC: Depletion of the Ozone Layer
CLASS: JSS 3
SUBJECT: Basic Science
PERIOD: Double
DURATION: 80 minutes
DATE:

Junior Secondary School 3 | Depletion of the Ozone Layer

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Describe the ozone layer and indicate its location.
  2. Explain the economic importance of the ozone layer.
  3. Identify the factors that lead to the depletion of the ozone layer.

KEY VOCABULARY WORDS: Ozone layer, Ultraviolet (UV) rays, Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), Greenhouse gases, Depletion, Global warming

RESOURCES AND MATERIALS:

  • Diagram showing the location of the ozone layer in the atmosphere
  • Flashcards with key vocabulary
  • Chart illustrating the causes of ozone layer depletion
  • Textbooks (Basic Science)

BUILDING BACKGROUND:

Explain that the ozone layer is a protective shield located in the Earth’s stratosphere, responsible for absorbing harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. The depletion of this layer can lead to increased UV radiation reaching the Earth’s surface, causing environmental and health issues.

CONTENT (Details of the Note)

The Ozone Layer:Definition: “The ozone layer is a region in the earth’s stratosphere that contains high concentrations of ozone and protects the earth from the harmful ultraviolet radiations of the sun.”

  • It plays a critical role in protecting living organisms by absorbing the majority of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Ozone Layer Depletion The Ozone layer depletion can be define as the gradual thinning of the earth’s ozone layer in the upper atmosphere caused due to the release of  chemical compounds containing gaseous bromine or chlorine from industries or other human activities.”

  1. Economic Importance of the Ozone Layer:

  • Human Health: Protects humans from skin cancer, cataracts, and other health issues caused by excessive exposure to UV rays.
  • Agriculture: Shields crops from damage caused by UV radiation, which could affect food production.
  • Fisheries: Prevents damage to plankton and other marine life, which forms the foundation of marine food chains.
  1. Factors Leading to Ozone Layer Depletion:

  • Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs): Found in air conditioners, refrigerators, and aerosol sprays, CFCs are the primary cause of ozone depletion.
  • Halons: Used in fire extinguishers, these substances also contribute to ozone layer damage.
  • Other Chemicals: Nitrous oxide from fertilizers and other industrial processes contributes to ozone depletion.
  • Global Warming: While different from ozone depletion, global warming can exacerbate the problem by affecting atmospheric conditions.

STRATEGIES AND ACTIVITIES:

  1. Class Discussion:
    • Begin with a class discussion where students describe the ozone layer and identify its location in the atmosphere.
  2. Pair Discussion on Economic Importance:
    • In pairs, students will discuss the economic importance of the ozone layer, focusing on health, agriculture, and marine ecosystems.
  3. Group Activity:
    • In small groups, students will explore the factors that contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer, including CFCs and other harmful chemicals.

WRAP-UP & ASSESSMENT:

  • Recap the importance of the ozone layer in protecting life on Earth.
  • Ask students to explain how human activities contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer.
  • Assess students through a quick oral quiz to reinforce key points from the lesson.

ASSIGNMENT:

  • Write a short essay on the effects of ozone layer depletion and suggest ways individuals can help protect the ozone layer.
