It is a natural component of the Earth’s atmosphere and is produced by various natural processes, such as respiration, volcanic activity, and the decay of organic matter. However, human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas, have significantly increased the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, meaning it absorbs and emits infrared radiation, leading to the greenhouse effect and global warming.
