SERMON ON GIVING | TYPES OF GIVING | BENEFIT OF GIVING IN BIBLE

Introduction

The man in the bible verse read to us approached Jesus asking for what to do to enter the kingdom of God and Jesus responded to him that thou knowest the commandments and He listed all the commandments to him, however the man’s response was that he has kept all of the commandment from his youth. This means the man was exposed to the commandments right from his childhood.
He knows that is not good to kill, or to steal, and other commandments listed in the bible and all this is what he has kept including the one that has insurance policy, which is honour thy father and thy mother so your days may be long.

Looking at this mans life in keeping all this commandments, some factors were responsible for this:

A. Parents:

The parents must have been the type that teaches the word of God. What this means is that the child is always with the parents whenever they are going to serve God or are studying God’s words.

B. Friends:

The friends might have showed/ influenced him in the way of God. They are likely the type that is always with their own parents who love God’s words hence the reason he was able to learn from them.
As a 21st century youth, what are we learning from our friends most especially in this corrupt moment. If we switch on our phone today, the first thing that pops up is pornography and other things that are not important for our spirit life.

C. The Society:

May be he grew in an environment where they teach the word of God and the word of God is rampant.

However, in the life of this man, something was lacking in him which Jesus observed. Jesus told him and asked him to sell all he has to give the poor that he will have treasures in heaven. Immediately the man was sad with what Jesus said to him and he left.
Now, the bible didn’t tell us if he did what he was told to do ie to sell all he has and give to the poor. So, what was actually lacking in the life of this man, and that is GIVING.

Outline:

1. What is giving
2. What can we give
3. Why must we give

Exposition

Giving is a topic that has a lot attached to it. John 3:27 and John said no man can receive anything except he is giving from heaven. Whatsoever we have today has is source from heaven.

1. What is Giving:

This means, denouncing ownership over your possessions. It is an expression that reflects an individual is denouncing he own something. Is beyond stretching hand or gestures to someone. Is agreeing that what you have you are ready to release for someone else to own.

What must prompt our giving is LOVE. John 3:16 says that “ for God so live the world, that He gave His only begotten son…, He didn’t just release His son to die for our sin but He gave Him out of the love He has for us.

Whatever you have that you want to release out must be given out of love and if love is not found in it, this means you gave out of hypocrisy.

2. WHAT CAN WE GIVE AS A YOUTH

A. Our Time:

There is this saying that time is money and also a teaching that says we should pay the tithe of our time. It means if a day is 24 hours we should give 2 hours 40 minutes as our tithe for God. Do we give God our time or spend time with Him. When you create time for God, it means you are given your time to God. When someone needs your help and you go all out to render that help, it means you have given that time to the person.

B. Our resources and possession: Acts 4:1-5. Here the people begin to sell their possession due to the miracles that took place through the Apostles. They sold their possessions and laid it at the feet of the Apostles.

Many of us have issues with the above. We find it difficult to give to God. Many of the youths spend money for data and other unimportant things but find it difficult to spend on the things of God. Note, our money is part of what we can give out to God and men.

C. Our life

This doesn’t mean to die or to die for somebody. There are so many lies among youths today when they claim they can give their lives for each other, but the only person that you must give your life to is Jesus. The bible said he that lose his life will find it. Is saying we should give it to the owner of our life which is Jesus because He has given His own to us.

If Jesus could die, nailed and flogged just for us to leave then why do we find it difficult to give our lives to Him. Many are struggling to give their lives to Jesus and yet we claim we gave our lives to Him.

The rich man said that he has kept all the commandments but forgetting that one thing is lacking, likewise many of us will claim that we keep the commandments but how many can claim confidently that we have given our life to Jesus Christ.

3. WHY SHOULD WE GIVE

This message is talking about giving and what’s so spectacular about giving and why must we give:

1. To meet others need:

God told Jeremiah that I am God and is anything difficult for God to do because there is no impossibility in His dictionary. However he will not do many things and the reason is because what others are asking is in the hands of another. God as blessed you with someone else’s prayer points, so why is it hard to give It out when you know the person is in need and seriously praying for it. That thing you have has its root from heaven.

b. Is a pathway to receive God’s blessing:

There are many blessings to receive from God but there are some you might be denied from, if you don’t learn the art of giving. In Luke 6:38, it talks about giving but the portion of what you give is the proportion of what you will receive. Most times the return of what you give might come on your children, household or generations as a blessing and not necessarily the type of what you gave out. This is one thing that is lacking in the life of an average youth.

c. It aids Evangelism:

If you approach someone that is hungry and you want him to hear the message of good news, the wisest thing is to feed the person then they will be ready to hear your message. Jesus did the same thing to those He intend preaching to. In other for Evangelism to be effective, we must learn to give. Also, those in missionary field are longing for your donations because we might not have the privilege to go out to preach but your donations can go a long way eg Missionary Funds etc.

d. It births the readiness to loose anything for Jesus:

This man was really thirsty for Jesus but one thing was a disappointment and is his lack of giving. Are we ready to lose everything for Jesus. Those people sold what they have and dropped at the feet of the Apostles. If we learn the art of giving and ready to do it out of love, it means you will never be told when to give.

In conclusion

The rich man never learnt the art of giving when growing up, no wonder he was sad when Jesus told him to sell his possessions.

Our work is not complete if we don’t learn how to give. The youth, is high time we start using our resources for God. Know this, if you follow Jesus have it in mind that you will definitely give out your resources too because He gave to many while He was alive.

Many youths today are stingy when it comes to the things of God. We have read the gospel, doing many things but what about giving. We might not be able to walk with Jesus if we don’t learn the art of giving.

Thank you.
