SS2 Chemistry 3rd Term Lesson Notes

Content:

  1. Structure of Water:
    • Chemical formula: H2O.
    • Molecular structure: Angular or V-shaped with a bond angle of 104.5°.
    • Polar molecule due to uneven distribution of electrons.
  2. Sources of Water:
    • Natural sources: Rain, rivers, lakes, oceans, wells, springs.
    • Underground sources: Boreholes, aquifers.
  3. Types of Water:
    • Soft water: Lathers easily with soap (e.g., rainwater).
    • Hard water: Does not lather easily due to presence of calcium or magnesium salts.
  4. Hardness of Water:
    • Temporary hardness: Caused by bicarbonates; removed by boiling.
    • Permanent hardness: Caused by sulfates or chlorides; removed by:
      • Ion exchange resins
      • Addition of washing soda
      • Distillation
  1. Purification of Water:
    • Filtration: Removes suspended particles.
    • Sedimentation: Settles heavy particles.
    • Chlorination: Kills bacteria.
    • Distillation: Complete purification.
  2. Tests for Water:
    • Anhydrous copper(II) sulfate turns from white to blue.
    • Cobalt(II) chloride paper turns from blue to pink.
  3. Uses of Water:
    • Domestic: Drinking, cooking, washing.
    • Agricultural: Irrigation.
    • Industrial: Solvent, coolant, hydroelectric power.

Teaching Aids:

  • Water samples
  • Copper(II) sulfate and cobalt(II) chloride
  • Diagrams of molecular structure
