The Structure of JAMB Examination For Student

The Structure of JAMB Examination For Student

The examination structure of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for students in Nigeria typically includes the following components:

  1. Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME):
    • UTME is the primary examination administered by JAMB for prospective undergraduates seeking admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
    • The examination covers four subjects: English Language (compulsory for all candidates) and three other subjects relevant to the candidate’s chosen field of study.
    • Each subject consists of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) with four options, and candidates select the correct answer.
    • UTME is usually conducted annually, and the scores obtained by candidates determine their eligibility for admission into universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and other tertiary institutions.
  2. Direct Entry (DE) Examination:
    • DE Examination is for candidates seeking direct admission into universities as second-year students, bypassing the first-year studies.
    • Candidates are typically required to possess a recognized diploma or its equivalent and meet specific entry requirements set by the universities.
    • The examination assesses candidates’ knowledge in relevant subjects, usually based on the requirements of the chosen course of study.
  3. Examination Format:
    • JAMB examinations are conducted using Computer-Based Testing (CBT) technology, where candidates interact with computers to answer questions.
    • Each examination session has a predetermined time limit within which candidates must complete the test.
    • The questions are randomly selected from a large question bank to ensure fairness and prevent cheating.
    • Candidates receive their results immediately after completing the examination, which they can also access online via the JAMB portal.
  4. Examination Administration:
    • JAMB collaborates with accredited examination centers across Nigeria to administer UTME and DE examinations.
    • These centers are equipped with the necessary facilities, including computers, internet connectivity, and trained personnel, to ensure the smooth conduct of the examinations.
    • Security measures are put in place to prevent malpractice and maintain the integrity of the examination process.

Overall, JAMB’s examination structure aims to assess candidates’ academic readiness for tertiary education while ensuring fairness, transparency, and integrity in the admission process.

The examination is computer-based and covers four subjects, chosen based on the candidate’s intended course of study in university. Each subject consists of multiple-choice questions, and the total score is 400, with each subject contributing a maximum of 100 points.
