INTRODUCTION
Christianity is not first a religion; it is a relationship and a call to discipleship.
When Jesus met ordinary men by the sea, He did not say,
“Join a religion,”
He said:
“Follow Me, and I will make you…” — Matthew 4:19
This statement reveals two powerful truths:
- Christianity begins with following
- Christianity continues to become
To follow Jesus is not just to believe in Him intellectually, but to submit your life to His leadership, allowing Him to transform you.
Today, we are examining what it truly means to be a Christian through the lens of discipleship.
WHO IS A CHRISTIAN?
A Christian is not merely someone who:
- Goes to church
- Was born into a Christian family
- Bears a Christian name
A Christian is someone who has:
- Received Christ
- Believed in His name
- Accepted Him as Lord and Savior
Scriptural Backing
“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God…” — John 1:12
A Christian is a child of God, not by birth, but by faith in Christ.
“You shall call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21
A Christian has been saved from sin and now lives for Christ.
HOW DO WE BECOME A CHRISTIAN?
Becoming a Christian is not by:
- Good works
- Church attendance
- Morality alone
- Repentance
Turning away from sin and toward God
Acts 3:19 — “Repent therefore and be converted…”
- Faith in Jesus Christ
“Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28
Jesus invites us personally. Christianity begins when we respond to that invitation.
- Confession and Acceptance
Romans 10:9 — “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus…”
Christianity is both inward belief and outward confession.
WHAT ARE THE FUNDAMENTAL REQUIREMENTS FOR BECOMING A CHRISTIAN?
- Total Surrender to Christ
Luke 9:23 “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself…”
Christianity is not adding Jesus to your life; it is handing your life over to Jesus.
- New Birth (Spiritual Regeneration)
John 3:3 “Except a man be born again…”
No one becomes a Christian by improvement; we become Christians by transformation.
- Obedience to His Word
John 14:15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.”
Love for Christ is proven by obedience, not just words.
WHEN YOU BECOME A CHRISTIAN, WHAT NEXT?
Many people stop at salvation, but salvation is the beginning, not the destination.
- You Become a Disciple
Matthew 4:19 — “Follow Me…”
A disciple is:
- A learner
- A follower
- A life-long student of Christ
- You Grow Spiritually
1 Peter 2:2 — “Desire the sincere milk of the Word…”
Christian growth requires:
- Bible study
- Prayer
- Fellowship
- Service
- You Represent Christ
2 Corinthians 5:20 — “We are ambassadors for Christ…”
Your life becomes a message people read every day.
HOW TO REMAIN A CHRISTIAN (HOW TO STAND FIRM IN FAITH)
Becoming a Christian is a moment; remaining one is a journey.
- Stay Rooted in the Word
Psalm 119:105 — “Your word is a lamp to my feet…”
A Christian who neglects the Word will struggle in faith.
- Maintain a Strong Prayer Life
1 Thessalonians 5:17 — “Pray without ceasing.”
Prayer is the oxygen of the Christian life.
- Walk in Fellowship
Hebrews 10:25 — “Do not forsake the assembling together…”
Isolation weakens faith. Community strengthens it.
- Be Led by the Spirit
“Because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into your hearts…” — Galatians 4:6–7
The Holy Spirit:
- Guides us
- Convicts us
- Strengthens us
- Confirms our identity as children of God
CONCLUSION
Christianity is not about what you claim — it is about who you follow.
Jesus did not say:
“Follow a church.”
“Follow a pastor.”
“Follow a denomination.”
He said:
“Follow Me, and I will make you.”
If you follow Him:
- He will make you holy
- He will make you strong
- He will make you purposeful
- He will make you useful
