WEEK 2

LIVING AND NON -LIVING THINGS (I)

Classification and states of matter

Objectives of the Lesson

The primary aim of this lesson is to provide students with a comprehensive basic science understanding of living and non living things and the differences between living and non-living things, the classification of objects based on the states of matter, and the characteristics that distinguish living things from non-living things. Objectives Are:

To categorize living and non-living things as matter.

To classify objects according to the states of matter.

To enumerate the distinguishing characteristics between living and non-living things.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  • Categorize living and non-living things as matter
  • Understand that both living and non-living things are composed of matter.
  • Identify examples of living and non-living things.
  • Classify objects according to the states of matter
  • Describe the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas.
  • Classify various objects and substances into these states.
  • Enumerate the distinguishing characteristics between living and non-living things
  • List and explain the key characteristics that define living things.
  • Differentiate between the features of living and non-living things.

DETAILED NOTES

CLASSIFICATION AND STATES OF MATTER

Matter:

Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. It exists in three primary states:

Solid: Definite shape and volume (e.g., rocks, wood).

Liquid: Definite volume but takes the shape of its container (e.g., water, oil).

Gas: No definite shape or volume, expands to fill its container (e.g., air, helium).

Living and Non-Living Things:

Living Things: Living things are organisms that exhibit life processes such as growth, reproduction, respiration, and response to stimuli (e.g., humans, animals, plants).

Non-Living Things: Objects or substances that do not exhibit life processes (e.g., rocks, water, air).

CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING THINGS

Living things have several distinguishing characteristics:

Growth: Increase in size and number of cells.

Reproduction: Ability to produce offspring.

Respiration: Process of obtaining energy from food.

Movement: Ability to move either part or the entire body.

Sensitivity: Responding to environmental stimuli.

Excretion: Removal of waste products.

Nutrition: Intake and use of nutrients for energy, growth, and maintenance.

CLASSIFICATION OF OBJECTS ACCORDING TO STATES OF MATTER

Examples of Solids:

Ice

Rocks

Metals

Examples of Liquids:

Water

Oil

Milk

Examples of Gases:

Air

Oxygen

Carbon dioxide

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS BETWEEN LIVING AND NON-LIVING THINGS

Living Things:

Growth: Living things grow and develop over time.

Reproduction: Living things can reproduce to create new organisms.

Respiration: Living things take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide.

Movement: Living things can move in response to their environment.

Sensitivity: Living things can sense and respond to changes in their environment.

Excretion: Living things eliminate waste products.

Nutrition: Living things require food to obtain energy and nutrients.

BASIC SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY J S 1 LIVING AND NON -LIVING THINGS (I) PDF

Non-Living Things:

No Growth: Non-living things do not grow.

No Reproduction: Non-living things cannot reproduce.

No Respiration: Non-living things do not respire.

No Movement: Non-living things cannot move on their own.

No Sensitivity: Non-living things do not respond to environmental stimuli.

No Excretion: Non-living things do not eliminate waste.

No Nutrition: Non-living things do not need food for energy.
