SUBJECT: BASIC TECHNOLOGY
TITLE: REVISION AND WELCOME TEST
SUB TITLE: DRAWING INSTRUMENT AND MATERIALS
PERIOD: DOUBLE
DURATION: 80 MINUITES
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the end of this lesson learners will be able to:
- Identify and outline drawing instrument and materials
- State the uses of common drawing instrument and materials
KEY VOCABULARY WORDS: Tee square, Set square, French curve
RESOURCES AND MATERIALS: pictures showing different drawing instruments and materials, real objects.

BUILDING BACKGROUND/ CONNECTION TO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE: Students are familiar with some drawing tools such as ruler, pencil etc.
CONTENT:
DRAWING INSTRUMENT
Drawing instruments are non-consumable items used during technical drawing. If well taken care of, they can remain for a long time. They include the following: drawing board, drawing paper, tee square, set squares, sliding square, compass, divider, French curves, set of compasses, protractor etc.
(i). Drawing Board: This is a flat wooden board with a smooth, rigid surface on which the drawing paper is placed. It is suitable for different size of paper such as the A2, A3, A4 size paper.
(ii). Tee-square: This is a T-shape instrument containing a head and a stock. It is used for drawing horizontal lines and for setting the paper on the board and to support the set square during drawing.
(iii). Set-square: These are instruments in the form of a right-angled triangle, made of plastic. We have the 45° and 30°/60°set-squares. They are used for drawing vertical and inclined (slanted) lines.
(iv) Compass: the compass is an instrument usually made of metal, wood or plastic. They are used to draw circles and arcs.
(v) Divider: It has almost the same shape with a compass, it is used to measure and transfer distances between points.
(vi) French curve and Flexible curve: French curve and flexible curve is used to draw curve lines that are not arc or circle.
(vii) Template and lettering set
Drawing materials
Drawing materials are consumable items used in technical drawing. It includes drawing paper, pencil, eraser, paper tape etc.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF DRAWING INSTRUMENTS.
- Care for Tee-square
- Never use it as working stick.
- Never use it for another purpose.
- Do not use sharp object on the edge.
- Do not play with it
- Care for plastic instruments
- Never use petroleum product on plastic instruments
- Never seat on it.
- Never use sharp object on the edge.
- Care for metal instrument
- Do not store in wet place.
- Keep away from children.
- Do not use oil on it, If rust and oil is necessary clean properly after use.
- Do not fight or play with any instruments.
STRATEGIES AND ACTIVITIES:
Activity I: Teacher leads by explaining the drawing materials.
Activity II: Learner’s list common drawing materials.
Activity III: Teacher introduces the lesson through questioning on how to care for instruments.
Activity IV: Teacher explains the ways to care and maintain different drawing instrument and materials.
Activity V: Students contribute to the lesson and participate actively.
