Meaning of obedience
MEANING-Obedience is the act of doing what you are told to do or expected to do.Obedience is the willingness readiness to keep and do whatever instruction given to us by God,our parents, teachers and governmental authorities.
The Call of Abram
The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you and he obey God.
Factors responsible for us to obey instructions and commands.
1)Faith
(2) Trust
Before one obeys any instruction,one must have faith and trust on the person who gives them.
The bible has records of people who responded to God’s call to obedience and reaped the rewards for that.
Examples of those who obeyed the call to obedience Abraham, The call of Joshua etc.
Abraham obeys God‟s call
Abraham was called by God to leave his homeland and journey to a new land that God would show him (Genesis 12:1-3). This act of obedience is seen as foundational to Abraham’s relationship with God and is often cited as an example of faithfulness.
Blessing from obeying God‟s call Gen. 12:1-9; – the birth of Isaac Gen. 21:1-8
- Genesis 12:1-9 – Blessings from obeying God’s call to Abraham:Promised Land: God promised to bless Abraham and make him into a great nation (Genesis 12:2). This blessing included the promise of a land that God would show him (Genesis 12:1).
- Great Name: God promised to make Abraham’s name great, and he would be a blessing (Genesis 12:2).
- Blessing to Others: God promised that through Abraham, all peoples on earth would be blessed (Genesis 12:3).
- Protection: God assured Abraham that He would bless those who bless him and curse those who curse him (Genesis 12:3).
- Genesis 21:1-8 – Blessing of the birth of Isaac:
- Fulfillment of Promise: The birth of Isaac to Abraham and Sarah in their old age was the fulfillment of God’s promise to give them a son (Genesis 21:1-2).
- Joy and Laughter: Sarah expressed her joy and gratitude by naming her son Isaac, which means “he laughs” (Genesis 21:3-6). This name reflects the laughter of disbelief turned into joy as God’s promise was fulfilled.
- Continuation of Covenant: Isaac’s birth ensured the continuation of God’s covenant promises to Abraham, including the inheritance of the land and the blessing of many descendants (Genesis 17:19-21).
Abraham is considered a model of faith and obedience. The book of Hebrews, describes Abraham’s faith as the hallmark of his righteousness and emphasizes his obedience to God’s call (Hebrews 11:8-19).
