DEFINITION OF FAMILY: A family is defined as a group of persons or people
in a ethnic group, consisting of father, mother and children. It can also be
considered to be persons or group of people connected or related by blood, affinity or by law.

EXAMPLE

1: Adam— father

Eve——–mother Our first parents.

Cain and Abel—children.

EXAMPLE 2:

Joseph—–father

Mary ——mother

Jesus——-child.

TYPES OF FAMILY

Basically there are two types of family. There are

  1. Nuclear Family
  2. Extended Family

IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY:

The first primary function of every family is to
ensure the continuation of the society through procreation. It is working towards
preparing their children for a creative and spirit filled life.
The importance therefore include
1. Protection: The family act as a strong protective shield
2. They offer us a sense of belonging in times of trouble, sharing our joys and
sorrows.
3. They help in boosting our self-esteem, which lessens our anxiety.
4. They help in defining our self worth and being.
5. The family helps to nurture one into whatever he/she becomes in the future.

THE ROLE OF FAMILY MEMBER

The role of the father. Col 3:8-21.
1. In every family the Father remains the principal factor of that home. He is
the head and thus bread winner of the family.
2. As the pillar of his family, it is his place to see to it that his family have a
roof over their heads.
3. He makes provision for other basic needs such as children’s education,
health care, good feeding and good clothing.
4. It is the duty of the father to set rules for the family, directs, and guides the
entirely family in good conduct.
5. The father has among other things to provide the needs of his wife, honour
and protect her.
6. The father as the king of his house must be impartial and just. It is infact his
duty to make sure every member of his family is treated equally

The role of the mother. 1 Peter 3: 1-9.

1. The mother is a companion and her husband’s helpmate. This means that in
every way she is to support the father in the running of the family.
2. The mother is the children’s role model training them in the fear and ways of
the Lord. So that when they grow up, they may not depart from it.
3. It is the sole responsibility of the mother to make sure her children grow in
self-control, reliability, trust, truthfulness, and to be hard-working.
4. The mother protect is to love her children tenderly, and shield them from
external affairs that will hinder their growth; Spiritually, Morally,
Emotionally and otherwise.
5. The mother is the umbrella of the family who must have no favorite, but
supports all her children.

The role of the child/children.

1. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long.
Gen. 18:30 (the fourth commandment).
2. The children are to seek, sit, and listen to the counsels of their parents.
Proverb 11:14
3. It is the place of the children to learn to understand their parents and forgive
them when they offend them. 1 Peter 4:8.
4. It is the duty of the children or child as the case may be to take good care of
he/her parents especially when they are old. 1 Tim 5:8
5. Every child must respect her parents and treat them as the God that they see.
